Federal Funding to Boost
'Information Network for Student Success'

SAN JOSE, CA — A Santa Clara County Office of Education information-tracking program for at-risk students will soon expand thanks to $400,000 in recently awarded federal funding.

The funding will allow Information Network for Student Success, which tracks educational histories of foster students, to also include similar data for pupils enrolled in juvenile institutions.

The information — including basic facts like students' names and ages, as well as test scores and transcripts — will go into a confidential database designed to help SCCOE identify and address the educational needs of such students.

The money comes as part of the fiscal year 2010 Consolidated Appropriations Act, approved in December by the U.S. House of Representatives. The legislation allocated about $11.3 million in appropriations for projects requested in the 15th Congressional District by Rep. Michael Honda (D-Campbell).

SCCOE's Juvenile Institutions and other services reaches about 475 students in grades 7-12 who are incarcerated at Juvenile Hall and three ranches. The SCCOE's Alternative Schools Department serves students under court supervision, as well as others who do not attend regular school for a variety of reasons, at these sites and at community schools throughout the county.
